Your first transient measurement
v3.2Updated 2026-10-02
Measure the thermal transient of a single device and view its Zth curve. Allow about 30 minutes, including calibration.
Before you start
Mount the device on the cold plate with thermal grease, connect the heating and sense leads, and confirm the instrument appears in the Devices panel.
Note
Use the same fixture and grease for calibration and measurement. Changing the fixture invalidates the K-factor.
Calibrate the device
- Open Measurements › New › K-factor calibration.
- Set the temperature range to 25 – 125 °C in 4 steps.
- Set the sense current to 10 mA and start the calibration.
- Accept the fitted K-factor when the linearity check passes.
Run the measurement
- Open Measurements › New › Transient (JESD51-1).
- Set heating current to 5 A and heating time to 60 s.
- Start the measurement. The cooling transient records automatically when heating ends.
Zth(t) result after a single transient measurement
Next steps
Open the measurement in Structure Function Explorer to compute its structure function, or repeat it with and without grease to evaluate Rth-jc by TDIM.
